Paint, appliqué and hand dye on upcycled tshirts
Made for MALLenMiami @ Museo Tamayo / lagosmx
Mexico City, MEX

ZapaTAZ is a selection from a larger body of work which takes inspiration from The Temporary Autonomous Zone (1991) by Hakim Bey. The Temporary Autonomous Zone describes an anarchist philosophy which favors short and sporadic uprisings over long and violent revolutions. T.A.Z. seeks to embrace chaos, free will, and avoiding all forms of social and political control. TAZ is also the name of the Looney Tunes character which shares the same qualities that Hakim Bey proposes. Pairing these two versions of anarchy creates a new contextual relationship, as well as an invitation to visit other examples of anarchy from the past.
These garments, designed exclusively for Museo Tamayo and lagosmx in Mexico City, make visual references to Emiliano Zapata, leader of the peasant revolution in Morelos and founder of the Liberation Army of the South, as well as Alfredo Ramos Martínez, a painter and educator who was prominent during the Mexican Revolution. On the 100 year anniversary of Zapata’s assassination, these pieces act as reminders of sacrifice and servitude, as well as examples of the many forms that resistance takes.
